WAYNE, MI - Authorities have confirmed that a suspected active shooter was fatally shot by a security guard at CrossPointe Community Church on Sunday morning, June 22nd in Michigan.
Officers with the Wayne Police Department (WPD) responded to reports of an active shooter and upon arriving on the scene, determined that a security guard for the church shot and killed the alleged armed suspect, ClickOnDetroit reported.
Police said that a security guard was also shot in the leg, but that no other church members were injured.
The shooting happened around 11:15 a.m., after the 10:45 a.m. Sunday service started, according to FOX17.
Authorities said that the armed suspect was on his way to the church when another person tried to stop him with their truck.
The alleged shooter has not yet been identified, according to PEOPLE.
He reportedly opened fire at the truck, and that's when a security guard for the church got involved.
Crosspointe Church Senior Pastor Bobby Kelly Jr. said that a member of the church ran the shooter over, giving the security guard time to shoot the armed attacker, the Detroit News reported.
Kelly said roughly 150 people were at a special vacation Bible school service Sunday morning when the shooting occurred, and more children than usual were in attendance.
He said congregants heard noises, but many assumed the gunshots were construction-related. Police are actively investigating the incident and have asked residents to avoid the area.
