Texas Dad’s Corpse Was Stuffed in Freezer as His Own Son Impersonated Him

BEXAR COUNTY, TX - A man who impersonated his father while his decomposed body was stuffed and hidden in a freezer has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Court records show that David Gibson was charged with tampering with physical evidence with intent to impair a human corpse, KSAT reported. Gibson was initially arrested back in August of 2024 after Bexar County sheriff's deputies conducted a welfare check at a home in northeast Bexar County.

Inside the home, deputies found the victim's body badly decomposed inside of a freezer. At the time of the discovery, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said Gibson had been impersonating his father and that it was unclear how or when the victim died.

"But the deputy got the sense it was not him," Salazar said. "Later on in the day, he was able to get in touch with some family members who said, 'That voice on that Ring is not our father.'" The father was identified as Daniel Gibson, Law & Crime reported.

The family helped deputies enter the home. Deputies looked around and saw a refrigerator in the garage that "appeared suspicious in nature," Salazar said. It appeared to be chained shut and when deputies opened it, they found human remains.

The family told police they hadn't heard from or seen the victim in months and there were some "indicators" that David Gibson had been living with the remains for quite some time, Salazar said. Gibson was allegedly cashing checks from his father's Social Security and military pension. The victim also apparently hadn't refilled his prescriptions for a while.

In a courtroom on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, Gibson pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal, which meant he did not face a murder charge. The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the cause of the victim's death undetermined.

During the sentencing hearing, members of the victim's family addressed the court, including the victim's son and David's brother.

"To disrespect him by placing him in a freezer and not telling anybody — you have no family anymore," Matthew Gibson said. "You are on your own."

Before being eligible for parole, Gibson must serve at least half of his 10-year sentence.
