Officer Islam was reportedly working as a uniformed private security guard in addition to his NYPD duties with the 47th Precinct in the Bronx.
The four-year veteran NYPD officer, husband, and father of two with a third child on the way, worked as private security for Rudin Management Company, according to The New York Post, and was shot in the back and killed along with four other victims near a Manhattan building where Blackstone asset management and the NFL maintain offices.
Islam was struck and returned fire at the assailant before succumbing to his wounds, the Daily Mail reported, citing CNN.

Islam’s widow is reportedly eight months pregnant with the couple’s third child.
During a press conference on Monday, New York City Mayor and former NYPD Captain Eric Adams told reporters that Islam was “doing what he does best, as all members of the police department carry out, he was saving lives.”
“He was protecting New Yorkers. He's an immigrant from Bangladesh, and he loved this city,” Adams continued, “and everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person that believed in God and believed in living out the life of a godly person.”
Adams was joined by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch , who added that Islam “died as he lived: a hero.”
“He was doing the job that we asked him to do,” Tisch said. “He put himself in harm's way, he made the ultimate sacrifice — shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise that he made to the city.”
Today, Police Officer Didarul Islam put on his uniform and went to work.

Commissioner Tisch confirmed that Tamura, a Las Vegas man, entered the Manhattan building armed with an M4 rifle, equipped with optics and a suppressor, and opened fire in the lobby, striking six people, killing five of them, and wounding one.
Responding police officers found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 33rd floor of the building, where Blackstone is headquartered.
Tamura was allegedly found with a suicide note on his person in which he claimed to suffer from CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, per CNN, and wrote, “You can’t go against the NFL, they’ll squash you,” suggesting the NFL may have been his intended target.
