NEW YORK, NY- Attorney Alan Dershowitz, Jeffrey Epstein’s former lawyer, said in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that while it is possible the alleged female human trafficker may have had help committing suicide, he doesn’t believe that anyone other than Epstein was responsible.
“It is clear from the evidence that Epstein committed suicide,” Dershowitz wrote. “What isn’t clear is whether he was assisted by jail personnel. That seems likely to me, based on the evidence of allegedly broken cameras, transfer of his cellmate, and the absence of guards during relevant time periods,” Fox News Digital reported.
Epstein’s alleged suicide has long been the subject of dispute, with many people believing that he was killed to keep him silent about “Epstein Island,” where it was alleged many of the rich and powerful in business, politics, and Hollywood frequented to engage in sexual relations with women and girls, some of whom were underage.
Epstein’s former girlfriend and alleged “fixer,” Ghislaine Maxwell, is currently serving a prison sentence for assisting, facilitating, and participating in “illegal sex acts, transporting a minor to participate in illegal sex acts, sex trafficking conspiracy, and sex trafficking of a minor,” according to a 2022 Department of Justice release.
The Epstein case has come under renewed scrutiny after a series of apparent blunders by members of the Trump administration, particularly Attorney General Pam Bondi, who several months ago insinuated she had “the full list of Epstein clients “on my desk,” but recently walked that back and said that no such list exists.
That has driven somewhat of a wedge between MAGA supporters and the Trump administration, since President Trump had promised to “get to the bottom” of the Epstein situation.
Democrats have also seized on the issue despite remaining silent about it for four years during the Biden administration. Their sudden interest in the case is a case of taking advantage of a politically delicate situation within MAGA world.
The Epstein suicide had been filled with bizarre coincidences, including the recent discovery of not one minute of video footage of Epstein’s cellblock but three minutes, according to tech site “Wired.” It was during that time that it is believed Epstein’s death occurred.
In addition, two jail guards, Tova Noel and Michael Thomas, were arrested for falsifying prison records to make it appear they had checked on Epstein before his death. In 2021, the Department of Justice decided to end that criminal case.
Epstein’s brother doesn’t believe he killed himself, noting that an independent observation of Epstein’s autopsy by Dr. Michael Baden called the official cause of death into question, along with the issues of no security camera footage and a pending push for Epstein to receive bail.
Earlier this month, the FBI and Justice Department issued a joint memo, announcing a review of the Epstein case file had been completed and that “no incriminating ‘client list’ had been found, no additional files related to the investigation could be released, and that the death was indeed a suicide.
In his op-ed, Dershowitz confirmed that Epstein did not indeed have a client list, but accusers interviewed by the FBI had outed several alleged “clients” whose names were redacted and sealed in court.
“I know who they are,” Dershowitz wrote. “They don’t include any current officeholders. We don’t know whether the accusations are true. The courts have also sealed negative information about some of the accusers to protect them.”
Dershowitz noted that federal prosecutors and private attorneys do not have the authority to release the names, however, federal judges do have that power.
“The media can, and should, petition the courts for the release of all names and information so the public can draw its own conclusions,” he added.
As of now, Maxwell is the only identified conspirator. She is currently appealing her prison sentence.
Some have suggested that she receive immunity to testify before Congress, which is looking into the matter.
