Fallen Wisconsin Officer Honored by Community and Business Leaders

MILWAUKEE, WI – Small businesses and community locals in Milwaukee are banding together to help honor a fallen Milwaukee Police officer who died in the line of duty this past June, with business owners opening up their parking lots to view the procession and community members helping to fundraise for the family members impacted by the tragedy.

On the evening of June 26th, Officer Kendall Corder and his partner, Officer Christopher McCray, reportedly responded to the area of 25th and Garfield in response to a domestic violence call reportedly involving a firearm.

Assistant Police Chief Nicole Waldner later told members of the press that the call was escalated to a shots-fired incident while the officers were en route to the scene.

Officials described what played out thereafter as an ambush, with Officers Corder and McCray coming under immediate fire upon exiting their squad vehicles and entering a nearby alleyway.

Officer Corder was reportedly struck several times and fell to the ground, whereas Officer McCray sustained gunshots to the foot, leg and back and attempted to both protect Officer Corder and return fire on the suspect.

A tactical team eventually arrived on the scene of the shooting, leading to authorities taking 22-year-old Tremaine Jones into custody.

Both officers were transported to an area hospital, with Officer Corder succumbing to his injuries three days after the shooting.

Officer McCray was released from the hospital on June 28th and is actively recovering.

In light of the unexpected passing of Officer Corder, locals from the surrounding community banded together to help raise funds for the fallen officer’s family as well as offering support to those mourning the loss.

One local business, Soren's Ford and Harder Funeral Home, reserved portions of their parking lot for those who sought to observe Officer Corder’s procession, which took place on July 11th from Elmbrook Church in Brookfield to Wisconsin Memorial Park.

The funeral home director, Ryan Harder, said of the gesture, “I just want to express my deepest condolences to the family as well as the police department, and I think it'll just be a really big show of support to them, how much it means with everyone here standing in honor, showing support.”

Meanwhile, local pub Steny's Tavern and Grill will be donating 50% of all sales garnered on July 15th to the families of Officer Corder and McCray, with general manager Laura Jean Gwiazdowski saying, “We hate when anything like this happens, but then we need to do what we can to help to ease any of the pain or the burden on the family.

Steny said we had to do something so we're going to do this.”

A separate fundraiser for Officer Corder’s family is also being hosted by Cudahy-St. Francis Little Baseball Association on July 14th, where a portion of concession sales will be given to the fallen officer’s family in tandem with proceeds from a raffle and donation booth.
