During the town hall, Weingarten was joined by multiple other left-wing figures, to discuss the planned protests taking place this weekend. She addressed the incidents in Los Angeles as well as other anti-Trump events, and said that "all of these were about how people kind of come together to actually say no this is not what we wanted. The people are the most important decision makers in the country. Not a king, not a dictator.”
The "No Kings" demonstrations are scheduled for June 14, the same day as President Donald Trump’s birthday, Flag Day, and the DC military parade set to honor the US Army's 250th birthday. During a virtual town hall on Tuesday, Weingarten encouraged Americans to join rallies across the country.
She also urged teachers' union members to participate in a “Nationwide Day of Defiance” on Saturday, aligning with the series of “No Kings Day” protests planned.
“On June 14, we’re coming together, peacefully and powerfully, to stand up against Presidents being Kings,” she wrote on X. "It’s about strong public schools, supporting working families, and our fundamental freedoms. This day of action is about making our democracy work for all. It’s about we the people not just about responding to what’s wrong—it’s about building something better.”
According to the No Kings national website, the protests are meant to oppose the Trump administration’s alleged attacks on civil liberties, court defiance, and favoritism toward “billionaire allies.”
“We've watched as they've cracked down on free speech, detained people for their political views, threatened to deport American citizens, and defied the courts. They've done this all while continuing to serve and enrich their billionaire allies,” the website claims.
"We're not watching history happen. We're making it," it added. "On June 14th, we're showing up everywhere he isn't — to say no thrones, no crowns, no kings."
The event comes as unrest continues in Los Angeles following federal immigration enforcement operations. The anti-ICE protests there quickly turned violent, resulting in widespread property destruction, fires, and assaults on law enforcement officers.
