Brian Michael Wilson, 31, of Marengo, has been taken into custody on aggravated murder charges, according to Morrow County court records. The incident occurred on the evening of May 26 in the 100 block of Country Road 26, The Columbus Dispatch reported.
An arrest affidavit stated that the Morrow County Sheriff's Office received reports from a neighbor of someone firing a gun at a truck. Sherrer was dispatched to the residence and saw Wilson sitting on the porch holding a firearm upon arrival. Wilson reportedly told the deputy not to come up the porch. Sherrer attempted to engage Wilson in conversation, but was unsuccessful. Wilson approached the steps and the two exchanged gunfire, according to the affidavit obtained by the outlet.
Police said Wilson allegedly used two handguns in the shooting, according to the affidavit, which referenced the deputy's body camera footage. Both of them were injured during the exchange of gunfire and were transported to local hospitals. Sherrer was later pronounced dead, while Wilson is expected to recover, authorities said.
"The guy was never in a bad mood," said Sheriff Hinton during the news conference. "He would go out of his way to see how your day was."
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issued a statement about the tragedy and ordered flags to be flown at half-staff. He expressed condolences to Sherrer's family, friends, and colleagues and said that the killing "reminds us how difficult it is to be a law enforcement officer."
Sheriff Hinton said funeral arrangements are pending.
