New Star Wars series ‘Andor’ on Disney+ features Imperial Officer sexually assaulting ‘undocumented migrant’

A new episode of Disney+ Star Wars spin-off Andor delves into the realm of undocumented immigrants and the power wielded over them by Imperial authorities. The third episode of the second season sees an attempted sexual assault against and undocumented fugitive.

Bix Caleen, played by actress Adria Arjona, is in a farming settlement when Imperial troops descend to round up the undocumented persons in the area. At first, an Imperial officer can be seen flirting with Bix before further attempts are rebuffed. Eventually, his persistence grows violent and the two fight, during which Bix kills the officer. "He tried to rape me!" She yells out.

The Hollywood Reporter asked Andor creator Tony Gilroy about it, who said in his response "All of us who are here—we are all the product of rape. I mean armies and power throughout history [have committed rape]."

The scene shows Imperial officers arriving at Bix's civilian home in a farm region. She's home alone. An officer approaches her, asking, essentially, if she's home alone. She tells him everyone else is in the "far fields." He asks about her husband, to which she replies, "He'll be back."

Once he's sure that she's alone, no men nearby, he enters her house. She's nervous as he checks his appearance in a mirror and says "I know you're illegal. We've been counting visas. It's a tough spot for everyone."

He then mimics the point of many in the current American political timeline, saying that undocumented persons are necessary to carry pick crops. "The Councils needs the help or there's no harvest. The help is undocumented. The rules are clear. But the situation requires... nuance."

He seeks her sympathy for how "stressful" his position is, telling her he's always looking for ways to "relax," indicating that she should massage him. She backs off as he comes onto her. "You want to think this through," he says. The idea is that he will overlook her undocumented status in exchange for sex.

"Please," she utters, "I'm begging you."

"Oh, but it's such a simple choice," he says, pushing her up against the wall.

"I said no!" Bix forcefully says, pushing him back. She hauls off and hits him. The two set upon each other in a brutal fight. He throws her to the ground, breaking things. She smashes her head, and he pulls her by her legs. She's able to kick him across the room and smash him in the face with a household object.

The officer stumbles around and pulls a gun on her. After a cut scene, he stumbles from the house dead. As another soldier approaches, holding a gun on the doorway, Bix calls out, “He tried to rape me," then she kills the second soldier too.

"I get one shot to tell everything I know," Gilroy said, "or can discover, or that I've learned, about revolution, about battles, with as many incidents and as many colors as I can get in there, without having [the story] tip over. I mean let's be honest, man: The history of civilization, there's a huge arterial component of is that's rape. All of us who are here—we are all the product of rape.”

"I mean armies and power throughout history [have committed rape]. So to not touch on it, in some way... It was just organic and it felt right, coming about as a power trip for this guy. I was really trying to make a path for Bix that would ultimately lead to clarity—but a difficult path to get back to clarity," Gilroy said.
