Gang-related shooting erupts following Mardi Gras parade in Louisiana

FRANKLINTON, LA - Jamerian Anders, 18, was arrested on five counts of attempted first-degree murder in connection to what police have called a “gang-related shooting,” which injured five people Sunday night in the hours following the Pepe Mardi Gras Parade.

According to NOLA.com, Washington Parish Sheriff Jason Smith told reporters that several individuals remained behind at an after-party after the parade concluded at 3:30 p.m. The gathering was cleared due to threats of gun violence Smith said, and the shooting occurred sometime after at approximately 7 p.m.

Franklinton police responding to the scene found five people had sustained gunshot wounds and were given lifesaving treatment by the officers and Sheriff’s Deputies. They were then transported to nearby hospitals. Three of the victims remained hospitalized due to their injuries late Sunday night with one in critical condition.
"It was fortunate there were police officers and sheriff's deputies on scene," Smith told reporters.

The authorities indicated that "additional arrests are probable."

According to WDSU, Anders confessed to police during questioning that the shooting was gang-related. Unrelated to the shooting involving Anders, two juveniles were arrested for possession of firearms near the parade route and within a school zone. Franklinton Police told reporters that an early threat of gunshots  led them to contact an individual found to possess an AR-15 style rifle.

According to the Franklinton Police, the investigation of this incident is still ongoing.
