House Speaker Mike Johnson has issued a new edict saying that only women shall have permission to access women's bathrooms on Capitol Hill. The move from Johnson comes after South Carolina Rep Nancy Mace proposed a new rule that would deliver the same result Johnson has provided.
"All single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings—such as restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms—are reserved for individuals of that biological sex," Johnson wrote. "It is important to note that each Member office has its own private restroom, and unisex restrooms are available throughout the Capitol."
"Women deserve women's only spaces," Johnson said.
The issue wouldn't be an issue except that a trans representative from Delaware has been elected and Mace wanted to ensure that she would not be faced with a male in a women's bathroom. She proposed a bill on Monday before saying that were it not taken up, she would move to have it included in the rules for the incoming 119th Congress.
Delaware's Sarah McBride, who came out as trans in 2012 and has been presenting as a woman ever since, has said that the people of Delaware want their new rep to focus on those social programs that McBride ran on, such as child care and health care.
