SCHAUMBURG, IL - A man has been charged after allegedly fatally shooting his daughter-in-law outside of a suburban wedding in Illinois.
Authorities with the Schaumburg Police Department (SPD) said that officers were called to the area near the Holiday Inn Express Hotel at approximately 10:15 p.m. on Friday, July 25th, NBC5 reported.
Upon arriving on scene, they found 45-year-old Christine Moyers outside the building; she had one gunshot wound to the head.
Moyers was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police also located a man who had been subdued by an eyewitness to the shooting.
That man was identified as Roland Schmidt and he was taken into custody.
A weapon was recovered at the scene. Schmidt has since been charged with first-degree murder, and remains in custody.
Police said that both the victim and alleged gunman were attending a wedding at the hotel, ABC7 reported. Moyer left the event and Schmidt reportedly followed her outside before shooting her in the head, police said.
Police said an investigation revealed that Schmidt was upset with Moyer over divorce paperwork she filed against his son.
Schimdt was in court on Monday, July 28th, and a judge ruled to keep him in jail until his next hearing, according to ABC7.
During the hearing, prosecutors argued that Schmidt admitted to planning this attack and then killing himself a week prior to the wedding.
Weeks before the wedding, Schmidt was told by his son that Moyer had planned to divorce him.
The prosecution argued that the family sat together at the wedding and on the way towards the parking lot, Schmidt allegedly came up behind Moyer and shot her in the back of the head while she was talking to another family member.
Moyer leaves behind two children.
Schmidt's next court date is scheduled for August 22nd.
