CAMDEN, OH - An Ohio dad allegedly murdered an innocent mom with a machete after he mistakenly thought the woman was his daughter's ex-boyfriend.
The alleged murderer, 59-year-old Kenneth Brabant, went outside his home late Sunday as his scared daughter called the police to report that her ex-boyfriend was driving up and down their road on a motorbike trying to get her to come out of the house, the New York Post reported.
Five minutes later, an unrelated motorcyclist called 911 to say that his passenger, Leigha Huff, 41, had been cut by a machete. He rushed her to a friend's house, where the woman died before help could arrive. She was struck in the leg, Law & Crime reported.
Huff was a mom and has spent the last few years battling cancer. She was an awesome mother to her son, longtime friend Jeremy Tucker said. "She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time," Tucker added.
Audio testimony shared by WXIX from the unnamed man driving the motorcycle sheds light on those horrific moments.
"The guy was coming after us with that thing ... I seen him coming out of the corner of my eye ... and was he doing this, and she was like, 'oh my God,' and then I sped up because I knew he had done something," the motorcycle driver told police. "And she goes, 'oh my God, I'm hit. I'm hit.'"
Brabant is accused of throwing the machete at the motorbike, thinking the person on it was his daughter's ex-boyfriend, police said. "It just happened to be a random motorcycle coming down the road," Sheriff Mike Simpson said in a statement.
Brabant was arrested on Monday and has been charged with murder, tampering with evidence, attempted murder, and assault.
He is being held in the Preble County Jail on a $1 million bond. "All I can say is I'm sorry," he said at his initial court appearance on Wednesday.
Those in attendance said that he was visibly emotional.
