A security guard fatally shot a suspected gunman during a Sunday morning incident at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, Michigan, police confirmed.
The Wayne Police Department responded to reports of an active shooter at the church, located on Glenwood Road between South Wayne and South Newburgh roads, on Sunday morning. Upon arrival, officers determined that an armed suspect had been shot and killed by a member of the church’s security team. Authorities also confirmed that one person was shot in the leg during the incident.
Police have asked the public to avoid the area as the investigation remains active.
Officials did not release the identity of the suspect or the injured individual. The motive behind the incident has not been disclosed.
The shooting occurred shortly after a church event had ended and while the service was still being live-streamed on YouTube. Video footage from inside the church shows the congregation applauding and beginning to rise from their seats when off-camera shouting begins.
Attendees are seen ducking for cover and running from the room as someone shouts, “Everybody to the back, please, everybody come to the back. Come to the back.” A loud bang follows, triggering additional screams before the video feed cuts out.
One witness, Wendy Bodin, told reporters she had stepped into the lobby to take a phone call when she saw a man on the ground. “I thought he got hit or crashed his car,” she said. Bodin said she was told to call 911 and then heard a rapid series of gunshots.
“Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop,” she said, according to ClickOnDetroit. She ran into a bathroom and hid with another person.
“We didn’t know what was going on, but we knew it was bad,” she said. “It was the scariest thing I’ve ever been involved in. I was hiding in one of the bathrooms and stood on the toilet and shut the door.”
