Dems lose ground to GOP as ‘party of the middle class’: CNN poll

A new poll released by CNN has revealed that the Republican and Democrat Parties are nearly tied when Americans were asked who represents the party of the middle class.

The poll found that the Democratic and Republican parties were neck and neck, when the margin of error was taken into account, for the title of the "party of the middle class," with 34 percent of respondents giving the title to the Democratic party, while 32 percent said the same of the Republican Party.

The poll was conducted for CNN by SSRS between May 5 and 26 of 2,028 American adults and has a margin of error of 2.7 percent.

CNN’s Harry Enten noted the numbers in a recent broadcast, showing that the large lead the Democratic Party had over the GOP in this field has shrunk from 23 percent in 1989.

"This, I think, speaks to Democratic ills more than anything else. They have traditionally been the party of the middle class. No more. Donald Trump and the Republican Party have taken that mantle away and now a key advantage for Democrats historically has gone, Adios amigos."

The poll also revealed that more Americans view the Republican Party as one of change, strong leaders, and one that can "get things done" than the Democratic Party.

The CNN poll, conducted by independent research company SSRS, found that 40 percent of Americans said that the Republican Party was the party with strong leaders, compared to 16 percent who said such for the Democratic Party. An additional 32 percent said that the Republican Party was the "party of change," compared to 25 percent who said as such for the Democratic Party.

Additionally, 36 percent of respondents said that the Republican Party was the party "that can get things done, compared to 19 percent who said as such for the Democratic Party.

The responses to these questions saw most respondents say "neither party" fit the descriptors issued by the poll, with 43 percent saying neither party had strong leaders, 42 percent saying neither party was the party of change, and 44 percent saying neither party can "get things done."
