DHS Announces Afghans in the US to Lose Temporary Immigration Protections

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) formally moved on Monday to revoke a temporary immigration shield for Afghan nationals living in the United States, citing improved conditions in the country. Barring a legal challenge, that means the agency will end the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) that was offered to Afghans under the Biden administration after the United States withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021 and the Taliban took over. In a notice filed Monday to end TPS through the Federal Register, the agency determined that Afghanistan no longer meets its criteria to fall under TPS.
