Military Humvee crashes off freeway overpass in Washington state

A military Humvee towing a trailer veered off Interstate 90 in Bellevue, Washington, on Saturday, crashing over a retaining wall and plunging approximately 30 feet onto a street below, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The incident occurred on the eastbound side of I-90 near the Eastgate neighborhood. Authorities say the vehicle, which was part of a military convoy, drifted to the right for unknown reasons. It left the roadway, crossed a grassy shoulder, and then dropped off the overpass, landing on Southeast 38th Street.

“This happened just a bit ago,” Trooper Rick Johnson tweeted on Saturday, sharing photos of the crash scene and the dramatic drop from the freeway. “This military vehicle pulling a trailer was on EB 90, drifted right, went off the roadway, and crashed over the wall into SE 38th St in the Eastgate area of Bellevue. Two minor injuries and no other vehicles involved.”

The two occupants of the Humvee sustained minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for evaluation. “The sergeant at the scene told me that they were minor injuries, but ... the fire department really suggests you go get checked out,” Johnson said in a statement to Fox News.

The Humvee was part of a convoy believed to be headed to the Yakima Training Center in central Washington, a frequent destination for military traffic along I-90. Johnson noted that the vehicle sustained significant damage in the crash.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
