Canada has added a serious warning to its travel advisory on the United States, warning its citizens of increased scrutiny when entering or exiting the country.
“Every country or territory decides who can enter or exit through its borders and the Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet entry or exit requirements for the United States,” the advisory stated.
The warning emphasized that US border agents have “significant discretion” in determining whether an individual meets entry or exit requirements and said Canadian travelers should expect heightened scrutiny, including checks of electronic devices such as cell phones.
“Individual border agents often have significant discretion in making those determinations. U.S. authorities strictly enforce entry requirements. Expect scrutiny at ports of entry, including of electronic devices. Comply and be forthcoming in all interactions with border authorities. If you are denied entry, you could be detained while awaiting deportation,” the advisory read.
In addition to the advisory, the Canadian government issued a guide to assist citizens who may be detained at the US border.
This marks the second major update by Canada regarding travel rules to the US. In March, Canada issued a notice stating that all Canadians and foreign nationals visiting the US for more than 30 days must register with the US government following an order by the Trump administration.
“Canadians and other foreign nationals visiting the United States for periods longer than 30 days must be registered with the United States government,” the notice said. “Failure to comply with the registration requirement could result in penalties, fines, and misdemeanour prosecution.”
The updated guidance comes as trade tensions between Canada and the United States continue to escalate, with both countries imposing stricter regulations on commerce. In response, some Canadians have called for a boycott of tourism to the US.
