In an emotional interview with Austin's mother, Meghan Metcalf, she said that she got a call from Autin's twin brother Hunter, telling her that his brother had been stabbed.
"My son is not here anymore, and I don't understand it," she said. "He was the most amazing kid. So smart. He had college football guys looking at him to play in college. His goal was to play in college."
Police responded to a call about the incident at around 10 am on Wednesday, where 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony, fatally stabbed Austin, according to police. Anthony was arrested and has been charged with first-degree murder. His bond is yet to be set as he sits in jail.
"We just want to make sure that everybody knows how much Austin is still going to be in our lives as far as our memories and our hearts forever. It's going to be really hard," Metcalf's mother added.
“He just had such ambitions and a drive that it's hard to find in the kid, and he's just such a good spirit, and so many kids loved him. And his brother lost his best friend,” Meghan added.
Austin’s twin brother Hunter, who was with Austin when the stabbing occurred, described what led up to the incident, saying that Austin as well as Anthony got into an argument about Anthony being in the wrong seating at the track meet.
"This kid is sitting under our tent at track. We asked him to move. He started getting aggressive ... and my brother stepped in and said, you need to move. He's like, ‘Make me move.’”
Hunter then emotionally recounted the stabbing and aftermath, with tears in his eyes.
"I tried to whip around as fast as I could," Hunter said, holding back tears in the interview. "I looked at my brother and I'm not going to talk about the rest. I tried to help him."
Austin died in Hunter’s arms as he was trying to keep pressure on the stab wound, which hit Austin’s heart. Police attempted to do CPR, but he was later declared dead at the hospital. "[Austin] did everything for our family," Hunter added. "As a linebacker, he was a stud, and I always tried to fill those shoes and play with him. I had a blast my whole life playing sports with him."
Hunter said that Austin has “always had [his] back” and that it was “heartbreaking to see someone that cares for you that much ... by your side, no matter what, just passed away like that.”
Jeff Metcalf, Autin’s father, also told reporters that Hunter as well as Austin were inseparable when Austin was alive, per NBC5. "They were twins, identical twins, and his brother was holding on to him, trying to make it stop bleeding, and he died in his brother's arms.”
Jeff has created a GoFundMe to honor Austin’s life, and which said that Austin “was a bright young man with a great future ahead of him.”
Austin was “voted team MVP this past season and carried a 4.0 GPA,” Jeff wrote. The GoFundMe page concludes saying, “We will all remember him for the way he impacted others' lives. I love you forever, son. It's not goodbye, it's see you later. God will take care of us till we meet again. RIP. Love, Dad.”
