BREAKING: Pete Hegseth renames Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth changed the name of North Carolina's Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg. This comes after the fort's name was changed under the Biden administration in 2023 in an attempt to rename military bases that held the names of long-dead Confederate generals.

"Pursuant to the authority of the Secretary of Defense, Title 10, United States code section 113, I direct the Army to change the name of Fort Liberty, North Carolina to Fort Bragg, North Carolina," Hegseth said, announcing the change. "That's right, Bragg is back."

The name of the fort was changed in June 2023 from Fort Bragg, named after Confederal General Braxton Bragg. The change came after a 2021 congressional commission that was tasked with renaming properties that were associated with Confederate leaders, according to NBC News. One of the nine military installations that was recommended to have a name change was Fort Bragg.

During the campaign, Trump promised that he would be changing the name back if he was elected to a second term. During a campaign event in North Carlina, Trump previously said, “We did win two world wars from Fort Bragg, right? So this is not a time to be changing names. We’re going to get it back.”
