LA Mayor Karen Bass slammed Ted Cruz for ‘fleeing Texas’ during blackouts—she was in Ghana when the LA fires started

Mayor Karen Bass was among those who derided Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) for being out of town during Texas' power outages due to winter storms a few years back, but when LA needed her she was in Ghana celebrating a political win for the new president of that African nation.

"Ted Cruz fleeing Texas in the middle of a deadly crisis is part of a larger pattern of the GOP abandoning folks in crisis. We need a movement to kick them all out." But Bass was nowhere to be found on Tuesday as the fires sparked in LA, fires that have claimed five lives already, over 2,000 homes and businesses, and displaced upwards of 30,000 people.

Mayor Bass was in Ghana attending the presidential inauguration of new President John Dramani Mahama when the fires began. Cruz, who represents Texas in Congress but has no authority over the state's power grid, went to Cancun during a storm-caused power outage.

News outlets and celebrities had a field day with Cruz's not being home during the outages. In response, Cruz explained, "Like millions of Texans, our family lost heat and power too. With school canceled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends. Wanting to be a good dad, I flew with them last night and am flying back this afternoon."

But little has been said about Democrat Mayor Bass, who would not answer questions from reporters about her absence when she arrived back in California on Wednesday.

"Madam Mayor, have you absolutely nothing to say to the citizens today who are dealing with this disaster?" Bass was asked. She did not acknowledge the questions.
