Amazon pays $40 million to license new Melania Trump documentary film

Amazon has paid $40 million to license a documentary film based around First Lady Melania Trump, which will make a small theatrical debut and appear on Prime Video.

Three sources familiar with the deal told Puck News that the film, set to be directed by Brett Ratner, will be accompanied by a two-to-three-episode follow-up docuseries. Melania Trump and Argentine producer Fernando Sulichin will serve as executive producers. Both Disney and Paramount reportedly bid for streaming rights to the project, but Amazon outbid for the limited license.

The film began shooting last month and is set to be released in the second half of 2025. Amazon said in a statement that the film will offer an "unprecedented behind-the-scenes look" at Melania Trump.

An Amazon spokesperson said in a statement, "Amazon Prime Video has exclusively licensed an upcoming documentary film for both theatrical and streaming release that will give viewers an unprecedented, behind-the-scenes look at First Lady Melania Trump. The project is executive produced by Fernando Sulchin (New Element Media) and Mrs. Trump — with Brett Ratner (RatPac Entertainment) attached to direct."

"Filming began in December 2024, with an anticipated release in the second half of 2025. Prime Video will be sharing more details on the project as filming progresses and release plans are finalized. We are excited to share this truly unique story with millions of customers around the world."

This comes after Amazon owner Jeff Bezos was spotted dining alongside his fiance Lauren Sanchez with the Trumps at Mar-a-Lago. Bezos has donated $1 million to Trump's inauguration fund, and his platform will be streaming the inauguration.
