VP Harris Breaks Record for Casting Tie-Breaking Senate Votes

Vice President Kamala Harris made history on Dec. 5 for casting the most tie-breaking votes in the Senate. Ms. Harris cast her 32nd tie-breaking vote after the Senate was deadlocked, 50-50, to advance the U.S. district judge nomination of Loren AliKhan—surpassing the record set by John C. Calhoun, who served as vice president for John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson from 1825 to 1832. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) joined all Republicans in voting against advancing Ms. AliKhan’s nomination to serve on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Following the vote, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) called the moment “historic” and presented Ms. Harris with a golden gavel....
